F is for Fashion, Style and Wardrobe. Wearing clothes and colors that are drab or wrong for you, styles that are very dated or just not suited to your appearance can be a subtle factor in preventing you from getting booked. Today, many leaders—women AND men—secure a stylist to help them select a wardrobe that helps paint a portrait as the true, impactful leader they are. Not only your clothes, but your makeup and hair might need a makeover to maximize your stage appearances. Be open to finding help to ensure you are seen as a go-to-speaker with great stage presence and appearance. There are stylists who specialize in speakers!

8 Things a Speaker Can’t Afford to be Without in 2021

One of the most effective ways for leaders to expand their impact, attract more clients, and increase the number of people they serve is to get out and speak.

This doesn’t need to be only delivering high-level professional keynotes in front of thousands of people. It can be consistent outreach at local venues that welcome your words and your message. But to do this, you should be well prepared in advance. You want to present yourself as accomplished, an expert in your field, and a respected presenter. To convince bookers to take a chance on you, you need to make them feel confident that you can be a benefit to their audience, and won’t embarrass the booker onstage.

The task, of course, is creating a compelling signature talk or several depending on the audience. These should be delivered with enthusiasm, authenticity, vulnerability, and emotional high points, and if you are imparting information, great value. You should be able to deliver various versions at 30, 60, or 90 minutes. These can be inspirational, motivational, speaking to enroll, or even sales-driven, if you have programs that serve or support your organization. If you are driving sales or enrolling from the stage, you will need to test and enhance your skills that drive people to action. But if you need more than that, if you’re embarking on a speaking campaign, there are eight things you cannot afford to be without.

If you would like to get booked consistently, you’ve got to make sure you’ve got these eight things nailed down. You have to have a great benefit-driven speaker one sheet that’s number one, the one marketing tool that every speaker needs are a one-sheet. This single-page document, which should be printed on glossy paper if used as a handout, should contain all the information to impress the booker about your skills as a presenter, the value of your content, why they should book you, your expertise, and what other people have said about you and your presentation. Now, most importantly, it should speak to how it will benefit the audience. What’s in it for them? Your expertise isn’t enough, your great presentation skills aren’t enough. You need to give them a reason, demonstrating how the audience will grow, change, learn, get motivated, or just take action.

What’s the benefit and the expected outcome?

Number two, you really have to have a compelling contemporary website. The first thing a booker will do is review your website. If you have a ten-year-old website or one with old links and old blogs, you are doing yourself more harm than good. Make sure you have a contemporary website, one that is horizontal in nature with big photographs, video, if possible, and minimal words on the homepage. The colors must also reflect today’s trends. Orange and yellow together, for instance, are straight from the 1960s. Your logo, if you are using one should be crisp and simple. The stipe must speak to today’s values, client needs, and user accessibility, with very easy navigation and little clutter.

If you have a website for your organization, make sure to have a page that features you as a speaker, to which they can direct the booker. The current photo is number three. Integrity in presenting yourself is key. So, if you’re using a ten-year-old photo to make yourself look younger, there is a disconnect in honesty between you and the person who books you or between you and the audience. You’ve already shot yourself in the foot if you show up looking very, very different.

Let go of your fear of rejection and how you look today and put on your best face, and go out and get new photos taken.

Number four is video. The most effective way to convince people you are worth booking is to show them how great you are in front of an audience. You want to arrange for someone to video your next presentation, edit it down to the best three to five minutes and post this on your website or any speaker presentation site, which you may have posted your profile. That could be eSpeakers, Women’s Speakers Association, Speaker Hub, whatever that might be. Number five is testimonials. Want to convince a booker you are worth presenting to his or her audience, show what other people have said about having you on their stages or how audience members have responded. Gather and present those testimonials, they are really critical.

Number six, number six is confidence. Even if you don’t feel fully confident, act as if while onstage. Confidence makes people feel that they are in good hands, but the way to get confident is to practice, know your stuff. Now, you shouldn’t be presenting from rote, but you should know where you are headed, like a roadmap. Work from a general outline in your mind. Do it enough times, and it becomes easier and easier. By the time I did 50 interviews for my last book, I honed my presentation so effectively that my next in-person speaking engagement was a breeze. I was able to focus on connecting to that audience because the content just flowed as I had done it dozens and dozens of times before.

Number seven, this is really important. An honest self-evaluation determines if more training is needed. Be honest with yourself, could your delivery or your presentation use some improvement? If so, then there are wonderful speaker trainers available to you. A good place to begin is the resource page at Speaker Tunity, www.speakertunity.com/resources. E has two applications: Engagement and Experiential. These two words are buzzwords in the speaking and online worlds. It’s not enough to just show up and talk. You need to engage the audience, to get them involved in some practice, ritual or experience. The more interconnected and sensory the experience–the more emotional the connection–the more the audience will remember you and sing your praises. Present a booker with some of the ways that you make it more than just a speech or PowerPoint presentation, and the more often you will get booked!

Radio Podcast One Sheet For Public Speakers

Today, everyone who wants to get in front of an audience to grow their business needs to have professional looking materials, that will impress a decision-maker. And, this is especially true for trying to get on live or virtual stages and podcasts. I’m Jackie Lapin, your expert in helping people get booked; and the founder of SpeakerTunity, the speaker and leader resource company. So let’s assume, that you want to save some money and you’re not going to pay someone else to create one of these from scratch. You can actually prepare everything and ready it for a designer. That’s going to cut your costs in half or even more. So, what should you be aware of in order to make this a smooth and easy experience? Well first, know what you will need to give your designer. This includes the written materials, including a four to six-paragraph biography, keep it short and impactful. Any requested headlines, this can be your name, a brand identifier, something like the family first advocate or the digital dynamo; or, some benefits, like building breakthrough themes or harnessing your harmony, or tell your story with a flourish etc. Any impressive testimonials.

Now, if you have a call to action, book Jane for an impactful conversation, bring John to your stage to inspire your audience. Your contact information and your presentation descriptions, if for a speaker, one-sheet, or for the topics that you speak on, for a podcast introduction sheet. Then decide which of these visuals you want to include, but provide them in a JPEG or PNG format; the following, a headshot or middle distance image from your waist up, and if you have them for a speaker one-sheet, photos of you speaking from the stage. Your logo or brand imagery, and if you wish to include them, logos from impressive clients you serve, places you’ve spoken or media, where you have been interviewed. Your book cover, if you are an author or logos representing your own podcast, radio show or YouTube channel, to boast your credibility and prestige logos from organizations you belong to, or prizes or medallions from awards you’ve won or received.

Next, are your instructions to the designer? If you know what colors you want to use, specify them, pick at least two dominant colors; and, if you can bride samples or specific key numbers, even better, because there’s so many different colors that they could be. Indicate whether this is a one or two-page speaker one-sheet. Podcast sheets are generally one page. Make sure your images are high resolution because a designer can’t work with low-resolution images. Specify any social media logos you want. Provide any specific ideas, concepts or directives, you would like to see carried out, or leave it to the designer and see what you get. The only problem with this is, if there are substantial changes, you will likely be paying for alterations. Make sure you get a PDF and the original art files, Adobe illustrator or EPS, Encapsulated PostScript, in case you want to make changes, and the original designer is not available to you.

And, the other designer can utilize these formats to edit or change your documents. Have a clear understanding of what you’re paying for and what the estimated fee will be, even if this involves an hourly fee. You may also be able to negotiate a fixed rate. Once you have your presentation sheet in hand, then you can distribute it via email or as an attached document, or post it on your website or download it or get copies printed, by one of the inexpensive online printing sources. D is for Direct Marketing. Most of the time today, speaker bookers are approached through phone, email or online submission form. So what actually gets their attention? Items sent in the old fashioned mail. Sending postcards, books or printed flyers in the mail is actually a novelty today. So consider using the US Mails to get a booker to sit up and take notice!

C is for Conferences, Conventions and Seminars. So conferences, conventions and seminars are a great way to get booked for OTHER conferences, conventions and seminars…People who are conference planners or organizers, people in the audience, other VIPs, or corporate sponsors all see you present…they may reach out to you, or you can gently probe for other opportunities they may know of. But here’s the key…don’t just fly in and fly out for your presentation. Hang around and meet people, get acquainted, build relationships. Conference leaders love it when their speakers are present through the event and available to attendees and VIPs. It just might get you some more gigs!

B is for Books. If you wanted to get booked for speaking gigs, one of the most important tools you can have in your corner is a book. When you portray yourself as a subject-matter expert as the author of a book, this significantly enhances your chances to get booked for speaking. The book needs to look professional, with a well-designed cover, even if you are self-publishing. Books–even smaller ones—give you a leg-up on other speakers. It’s not so important you sell a lot of books…the book is the wedge that opens the door. This is also true of radio, podcasts and TV. So if you don’t have a book, consider writing one..There are lots of ways to do this—book writing workshops, ghost writers, book coaches, online programs, editors and hybrid publishers, who can all help you along this journey.  So get a book to get booked!

Today’s Tip is …..

A is for Applications. If you submit yourself for conferences and conventions, it is highly likely that you will be asked to fill out an application called a “call for speaker,” “call for paper” or “call for abstract.” These can be a bit daunting, since they give you little latitude to augment the information they request, and you are often competing with hundreds, or even thousands of others. But land one or two and you’re really building your speaker resume. But one way to save yourself a lot of time is to create a word document where you can copy and paste standard answers, such things as a description of your presentation, your 50 word bio/100 word bio/200 word bio, your social media links, etc. Besides saving the repetition, these forms when submitted online often “time-out” and you don’t want to have that happen when you are searching your computer for something to add to the submission. Having this in one place, east to cut and paste will make this process much easier, faster and hitch-free.

How to Get Booked As A Public Speaker on More VIRTUAL Summits #Covid19

Are you tired of seeing everyone else you know get showcased on virtual summits that are driving their client surge? And you keep wondering why you’re not getting those same lucrative opportunities.

It’s because you’ve not learned the tricks of getting hosts to seek you out because you’re such a hot ticket, they have to have you on their lineup!

Summits are a great way to build your email list, introduce people to you and your body of knowledge, launch a book and engage new potential affiliate partners. Virtual summits are a critical part of a leader’s marketing today, especially since so much is now online! But to get invited consistently you need to prove your credentials as a great virtual summit guest presenter.

Once called telesummits before migrating to the web video, these cooperative online events are a hugely successful way to attract new prospects to your opt-in list, clients and book buyers. And one of best things about them is if you prove to be a good guest, then you get HOT on the summit circuit…you’ll get tons of invitations!

Just to back up a bit and make sure everyone knows what a summit is…this is where a host invites multiple guest hosts to speak on related subjects either in one day or spread over several days. However, everyone promotes to their individual lists. The benefit is that people you may never have encountered any other way will learn about you, watch or listen to your segment and then sign up for a free gift you offer that captures their email for your list.   

So how do you get HOT on the summit circuit…?

You’ll need 7 Things!  First, you’ll need:

  • A compelling subject that can be flexible to fit the summit theme

All summits have a theme, some subject matter that they are organized around. The guest hosts are chosen based on how appropriate their content is related to the theme.  So if you are targeting a specific host/summit, you must offer a presentation that speaks to that theme. This may mean creating something from scratch, or it just could mean re-titling or tweaking an existing presentation you already have. Some hosts allow PowerPoint slides and others simply want to have a dialogue or a Q&A, but you will need to give them a framework and description of your content/presentation. So make sure when applying, you offer a presentation that aligns with the theme.

  • Next, you’ll need a great freebie and landing page

Your free offer will be the key to your success. It has to be irresistible and lead listeners down the path of wanting more from you. It should be attached to an email sequence that urges them to either connect with you for a strategy conversation, purchase a product/resource or join a membership program. Your landing page needs to be crisp and limited on words. One good graphic, a short amount of copy and a registration form should do it, along with perhaps a smaller photo of you and one line on who you are.  Give it a url that is really easy to remember…both for you to offer and for them to take advantage of. The host will want to know your freebie in advance and will want to see it is in alignment with the theme or message.

  • Willingness to co-promote

When I speak with hosts, their No. 1 biggest complaint is that they have admitted a guest presenter who doesn’t fulfill his/her commitment to co-promote. It’s one reason most summits now have gone to a signed contract with guest presenters that actually commit them to specific dates for solos, newsletter inclusions and social media. And they are checking to make sure you’ve fulfilled those distributions. Word gets around fast if you don’t do your part. It’s the fastest way to get very COLD on the summit circuit. The invitations will stop coming. So promote and be a good partner, so that hosts have the confidence you’ll help them grow the event. And related to that, don’t fib on your list size. They can often tell by the limited response. Build TRUST!

  • Mini-media kit

Hosts need an easy way to grasp all the information needed for the marketing and your introduction. While many may require this info to be inputted into a jotform, typform or other automated system, so don’t operate digitally. A simple cut down media kit will do the trick… It should have a description of your presentation, including bulletpoint takeaways;  your short bio (the one they will promote on the air and include in marketing);, title, description and link to your free gift; your website, and your social media links. No more than 2 pages! 

  • Revenue-share products to sell in select cases

On rare occasions, I host will actually invite you to sell a product on his or her summit. And this often means a revenue split of 50%. So be ready in case you happen onto this type of an event. Know what you would sell at $97 or at $397. Have an easy way to purchase this either through a URL you offer — or be able to provide copy, graphics and delivery ability if the organizer chooses to host the order page.

  • Good sized list, if possible

Now many summits—though by no means all—have a minimum list size. Usually this will be 2500, 3000 or 5000, depending on the prominence of the host.  While yes, summits will help you build your list, the more you build it in other ways will help you qualify. Yes, it does sound a bit like a Catch-22, but there are many alternative ways to grow your list. Joint Giveaways are a great way—that’s where a host enables you to offer your free gift online in exchange for co-promotion.   You can also do radio shows and podcasts, offering your free gift to listeners. Try posting videos and photos on Facebook and Instagram to drive people to your free gift. Ask joint venture partners—other leaders with whom you have a relationship—to promote your free gift. Get your numbers up! It doesn’t take much and then you’ll be easily accepted into almost any summit for which you are in alignment. 

  • Great content!

This is paramount. Your presentation cannot me a 30 to 60 minute sales pitch. It needs to offer powerful content that will elevate the audience. It can’t be just rehashed from what tons of other leaders in your space have already offered. It’s uniqueness and packaging (title & description) will be the key to getting a host to say yes, and its empowerment for the listener will be the key to getting the host to want  you back again or spread the word that you were a great guest presenter. Give value! That’s JOB #!. Do this every time you have a summit opportunity and you will grow your opt in list, attract clients to you like a magnet, keep the hosts very happy and become a hot commodity on the summit circuit.
