How to Get Booked As A Public Speaker on More VIRTUAL Summits #Covid19

Are you tired of seeing everyone else you know get showcased on virtual summits that are driving their client surge? And you keep wondering why you’re not getting those same lucrative opportunities.

It’s because you’ve not learned the tricks of getting hosts to seek you out because you’re such a hot ticket, they have to have you on their lineup!

Summits are a great way to build your email list, introduce people to you and your body of knowledge, launch a book and engage new potential affiliate partners. Virtual summits are a critical part of a leader’s marketing today, especially since so much is now online! But to get invited consistently you need to prove your credentials as a great virtual summit guest presenter.

Once called telesummits before migrating to the web video, these cooperative online events are a hugely successful way to attract new prospects to your opt-in list, clients and book buyers. And one of best things about them is if you prove to be a good guest, then you get HOT on the summit circuit…you’ll get tons of invitations!

Just to back up a bit and make sure everyone knows what a summit is…this is where a host invites multiple guest hosts to speak on related subjects either in one day or spread over several days. However, everyone promotes to their individual lists. The benefit is that people you may never have encountered any other way will learn about you, watch or listen to your segment and then sign up for a free gift you offer that captures their email for your list.   

So how do you get HOT on the summit circuit…?

You’ll need 7 Things!  First, you’ll need:

  • A compelling subject that can be flexible to fit the summit theme

All summits have a theme, some subject matter that they are organized around. The guest hosts are chosen based on how appropriate their content is related to the theme.  So if you are targeting a specific host/summit, you must offer a presentation that speaks to that theme. This may mean creating something from scratch, or it just could mean re-titling or tweaking an existing presentation you already have. Some hosts allow PowerPoint slides and others simply want to have a dialogue or a Q&A, but you will need to give them a framework and description of your content/presentation. So make sure when applying, you offer a presentation that aligns with the theme.

  • Next, you’ll need a great freebie and landing page

Your free offer will be the key to your success. It has to be irresistible and lead listeners down the path of wanting more from you. It should be attached to an email sequence that urges them to either connect with you for a strategy conversation, purchase a product/resource or join a membership program. Your landing page needs to be crisp and limited on words. One good graphic, a short amount of copy and a registration form should do it, along with perhaps a smaller photo of you and one line on who you are.  Give it a url that is really easy to remember…both for you to offer and for them to take advantage of. The host will want to know your freebie in advance and will want to see it is in alignment with the theme or message.

  • Willingness to co-promote

When I speak with hosts, their No. 1 biggest complaint is that they have admitted a guest presenter who doesn’t fulfill his/her commitment to co-promote. It’s one reason most summits now have gone to a signed contract with guest presenters that actually commit them to specific dates for solos, newsletter inclusions and social media. And they are checking to make sure you’ve fulfilled those distributions. Word gets around fast if you don’t do your part. It’s the fastest way to get very COLD on the summit circuit. The invitations will stop coming. So promote and be a good partner, so that hosts have the confidence you’ll help them grow the event. And related to that, don’t fib on your list size. They can often tell by the limited response. Build TRUST!

  • Mini-media kit

Hosts need an easy way to grasp all the information needed for the marketing and your introduction. While many may require this info to be inputted into a jotform, typform or other automated system, so don’t operate digitally. A simple cut down media kit will do the trick… It should have a description of your presentation, including bulletpoint takeaways;  your short bio (the one they will promote on the air and include in marketing);, title, description and link to your free gift; your website, and your social media links. No more than 2 pages! 

  • Revenue-share products to sell in select cases

On rare occasions, I host will actually invite you to sell a product on his or her summit. And this often means a revenue split of 50%. So be ready in case you happen onto this type of an event. Know what you would sell at $97 or at $397. Have an easy way to purchase this either through a URL you offer — or be able to provide copy, graphics and delivery ability if the organizer chooses to host the order page.

  • Good sized list, if possible

Now many summits—though by no means all—have a minimum list size. Usually this will be 2500, 3000 or 5000, depending on the prominence of the host.  While yes, summits will help you build your list, the more you build it in other ways will help you qualify. Yes, it does sound a bit like a Catch-22, but there are many alternative ways to grow your list. Joint Giveaways are a great way—that’s where a host enables you to offer your free gift online in exchange for co-promotion.   You can also do radio shows and podcasts, offering your free gift to listeners. Try posting videos and photos on Facebook and Instagram to drive people to your free gift. Ask joint venture partners—other leaders with whom you have a relationship—to promote your free gift. Get your numbers up! It doesn’t take much and then you’ll be easily accepted into almost any summit for which you are in alignment. 

  • Great content!

This is paramount. Your presentation cannot me a 30 to 60 minute sales pitch. It needs to offer powerful content that will elevate the audience. It can’t be just rehashed from what tons of other leaders in your space have already offered. It’s uniqueness and packaging (title & description) will be the key to getting a host to say yes, and its empowerment for the listener will be the key to getting the host to want  you back again or spread the word that you were a great guest presenter. Give value! That’s JOB #!. Do this every time you have a summit opportunity and you will grow your opt in list, attract clients to you like a magnet, keep the hosts very happy and become a hot commodity on the summit circuit.

The Top Ways To Get on More Radio Shows and Podcasts, For Your Public Speaking Career in 2020

I am proud to say that I’ve booked more than 10,000 interviews and speaking engagements over the course of my 30+ year career. Writing compelling pitch letters, capturing the essence of someone, their message, mission and/or book is my superpower! 

And the last 10 years, we have developed an international reputation for specializing in booking radio shows and podcasts for non-fiction authors, personal growth leaders and filmmakers, so I am a firm believer in making sure that you are visible both on physical stages and in the digital world.

Here are some of the reasons I think that doing a Radio/Podcast Tour is always a great accompaniment to having a presence on stages, along with some musings on where the business is heading:

  • The great thing about podcasts today is that their hosts have a dedicated audience of committed listeners. With broadcast media, you are blasting your message shotgun and you don’t know who is listening.  
  • Many of the podcasts aggregators (podcatchers as they are called) feature both radio shows that have been edited to podcast, along with straight podcasts.  Radio shows now podcast their shows too, so you have even a larger potential audience than just their on-air listenership.
  • Many of the shows today are more than just audio! They are videocasts! So don’t assume that if you are doing it on zoom or skype that it’s audio. If you show up in your pajamas, you might be surprised! And so will the audience!
  • Because many podcasts are more easily recorded at the host’s behest, one of the ways that hosts are now scheduling their interviews is using calendar links. That way you can schedule when it’s most convenient for you, too! Instead of 6 a.m. LIVE! 
  • A really beneficial distinction from the “old days” of radio, is that most interviews today are 30 minutes to one hour. This gives the host the ability to dig deeply into the subject matter with you. And gives you more opportunity to promote!
  • A related factor is that if you are providing interview questions in advance to the host, it’s no longer 5 questions or talking points—You need to have 20! 
  • Radio is still a very viable medium. However, there are less locally based shows, as so many stations have moved over to offering nationally syndicated programming for much of the day. However, morning drive shows, weekend health and wellness shows and other locally produced programming are still thriving.  And the local public broadcasting station often has shows looking for guests.
  • A fact of life today is both increasingly broadcast shows AND podcasts are starting to charge for their airtime. It’s a small percentage, but I recommend looking closely at each one to see if it is key to reaching your demographic and has the numbers justify the fee. I strongly recommend against major spending outlays, but most are in the $50-$150 range, and might be worth considering. But if this doesn’t float your boat, there are thousands that don’t have this barrier to entry.  
  • With digital books becoming such a major part of the bookselling world, it provides an easy way for people to hear an interview and have the book in minutes. One of our clients reported she sold 700 books on Kindle from just ONE podcast.

How to Seduce Your Next Client From the Stage and / or on Radio, Podcasts or Virtual Summits

ALWAYS ARE YOU? NO IF YOU ARE…

Are YOU a changemaker looking to change more lives, attract more clients and scale up your business, on stage speaking may be the most compelling way to engage clients directly. And radio shows, podcasts and virtual summits are the next best thing when you can’t be in the room with your new prospects.

But how do you make these opportunities more than one-way conversations—how do you get the audience to actually engage with you—to get them on your list and in your community and so they will become avid buyers of your products and services?  

You simply make them an offer they cannot refuse!

The key to successful in room, on-air or online promotion is to offer something that entices people to sign up on your website, a landing page or a text autoresponder.

  • A free copy of your published book (this could be a new release or old stock—digital or print)
  • A free ebook or report
  • A free ticket to your event or workshop
  • An insider’s guide
  • A chart that helps them see where they fit
  • A personalized product (such as an astrological chart) based on information they submit
  • A useful digital tool for their advancement
  • Contacts for people who are influencers
  • Access to a virtual summit with at least one leading figure (besides yourself, of course)
  • A list of valuable resources they haven’t the time to gather themselves
  • Free membership in a club, organization or membership program with appealing benefits
  • Free original music related to your subject matter
  • Free interviews with other experts in your field that you may have interviewed
  • Free reviews of products
  • A raffle or contest for some valuable experience or opportunity, such as a VIP day with you or a private dinner
  • Something silly and fun that’s highly viral!

You’ll want to have this opt-in lure already in place before you start your appearances. While sometimes an on-air host will create an opening and invite you to mention your offer, more often than not you’ll have to slip it in. You can do that by saying something like, “and if you go to my website (name the site), you can get….”  Or “if you liked what we are discussing here, you can get more at (name the site) for free!”

So use your time on stage and on the air wisely and never forget to extend your invitational calling card –your call to action–to the audience!

How Do You Get Booked for a TEDx?

So you just know there is a viral TEDx presentation in your future.

But before that happens you have to find a TEDx that will book you!

My name is Jackie Lapin and I am considered an expert at helping people get booked for speaking engagements. However TEDx events are very different than your average business meeting or conference keynote.

The TEDx booker will be looking for a topic that is different, compelling and offers a unique perspective that opens up people to a new way to experience the world—“an idea worth spreading.”  Bookers will also want to ensure that you have an accomplished presentation style, so having dynamic video will be helpful. You’ve only got 18 minutes and it needs to be sparkling and brilliant! Some TEDx events are themed, so don’t even apply unless your presentation fits the theme or you are likely to suffer a rejection—or more likely–be ignored.

So to increase your potential to get selected, I suggest the following:

  • Go to the website (TELL THEM THE WEBSITE URL HERE) and see what are the specifications for submitting. Some TEDx event have a full separate website with submission information. Others provide an email for the organizers where you can begin a discussion about presenting. However, others can only be applied to through the TED submission site.

  • So have ready at hand a powerful description of what you intend to present, supported by a “speaker one-sheet” showcasing you as an experienced speaker if you have one, and you may even be required to submit an 18-minute “audition” video. Often there is a form that you must complete and submit.

  • Want a great way to ease your way in? Go to the nearest TEDx events near you that are already booked and get a quick handshake connection with the organizers, get their contact information and watch to see what kinds of presentations they are selecting. Many organizers stay on and repeat their role the next year going forward. Some events even repeat more than once a year.

  • If you missed a deadline, it’s likely the same event will repeat in the future, so start reaching out again once this one is passed, or watch for the next open submission date.

  • When submitting, remember your presentation cannot be a sales pitch. It’s a showcase for you. It should demonstrate your expertise in your field and that you are an out-of-the-box thinker with “an idea worth spreading.”

  • There are multiple ways to learn the tricks to getting booked and creating the compelling presentation that will get the attention of the TEDx organizer. One way is to attend a workshop offered by one of the accomplished speaker-trainers who specialize in helping leaders with their TEDx talks.

  • The next way is to brush up on books. Below are a list of books that are a good starting place.

Your chances of getting booked at a TEDx go up if you apply to multiple events. Because the one close to you may be booked a year out, or is looking for a different kind of speaker, or maybe is only booking people with mega experience and credentials.

My Pioneering Spirit | How Do YOU Approach Life?

I’ve been reflecting a bit on how I approach life. We each have a trait that more of less sums up how we approach life…some people are nurturers, others are adventures, others might be observers or perhaps teachers.

I believe I would proudly see myself falling into the category of pioneer…In looking back on my life I think I have boldly forged ahead where others have yet to go. Not because I’m fearless or that I’m a genius…I just think I’m responding to the cues from the Universe and from my internal yearnings.

Let me give you an example…When I was a child, my father had life-threatening cancer. He was only 32 years old. Fortunately, he survived but was unfortunately wiped out financially, so he elected to move us to another area to try to start over. But when we got there, it became very evident that I was very different than the other kids and that they had a closed social circle.

They didn’t want anything to do with me and I was very alone. Have you ever felt like an outlier?

Being alone, I had a lot of time to think…about what I loved. And two things I was passionate about were the Los Angeles Dodgers and writing. Calling to me was the idea of marrying them together, and so, at the age of 11, I created my dream of being a sportswriter, at a time there were no other women sportswriters. I committed myself to learning the right skills, and I was at the Detroit Free Press by 20, the Associated Press and on the front pages of the LA Times by 21 and at the Washington Post by 22.

 

Following that, I fell into working for the regional office of a big national PR firm. But I chafed at working for others, so I left and hung out my own shingle, but I knew that sports was what I still wanted to do at the time. All the sports PR firms in the country were then owned by men, who all loudly scoffed at my ability to succeed. But I just knew that there was a place in that world for a woman. And I subsequently built one of the largest sports/special events/cable TV firms in America with a world class client list that included Toyota, Avon, Seagrams, Showtime, Playboy, HBO, the National Hockey League, the World Poker Tour and more.

 

After 20 years of running the agency, I felt called to write my two award-winning books on Practical Conscious Creation. And by then, I realized that the mainstream media had changed and was becoming difficult to book for clients. I sensed the universe was guiding me in a different direction, to serve other personal growth leaders like myself, by offering them to radio shows (and subsequently podcasts) where there was a willing audience! Media who were passionate about helping people improve their lives. That’s when we pioneered the personal development radio/podcast tour…which we still do.

Which leads me to today..

Many of our clients kept asking us if we would book speaking engagements (another universal nudge) but I knew that wasn’t for us …. but what if we could simply give them all the contacts themselves, therefore eliminating all their own research time to find speaking engagements?

How Do I Find Speaking Opportunities as a public speaker in 2020?

The first question anyone asks when they know that they must get out to speak to grow their business is “Where Do I Find Speaking Opportunities?”

And this can be indeed daunting. But if you break it down and you commit the time, you can master this skill.

I’m Jackie Lapin, and as founder of SpeakerTunity and SpeakerTunity Cities, I’ve spent the last 5 years finding and identifying speaking opportunities for leaders, experts and entrepreneurs. My team and I track close to 900 local organizations that have local chapters all across North America, so we can make sure that speakers can get connected with the ones that are their ideal match. But you don’t need to go that deeply down that rabbit hole!

Let’s look at what kind of public speaking engagements are possible by genre.

• The first and easiest to book are local meetings. Whether they are general business networking, chambers of commerce, service groups or consumer special interest groups, these are easy to identify using Google and MeetUp. Search use keywords + your market and it’s likely they will pop up. Then go to the website to see who is likely to be the right contact person or call the organization.

• Professional groups and associations are an excellent place to present, and a great source for these is the Directory of Associations. In this vast directory of 35,000 associations, you can search by subject matter or by state.

• If you are looking for corporate gigs, than your best place to get connected is at LinkedIN. Use this resource to find the most likely people filling roles that would possibility lead to retaining a speaker at a particular company you’d like to approach – human resource director, sales or marketing manager, event manager, event coordinator, meeting planner, etc. You can also do a search for the title of event manager, event coordinator or meeting planner and then reach out to those people who surface in your search process.

• Professional conferences are more challenging to find and get booked because there are many gatekeepers, it’s likely you will be filling out a form rather than talking to the meeting planner, and they fill up fast once they announce their “calls for speakers.” But if this is where you want to connect, then search Google for the keyword for that type of conference. For example: women’s conference, entrepreneur conference or summit, lawyer’s conference, health conference, etc.

• Consumer and Trade Events are a great place to speak, and one place you can track them in advance on a site called Events in America. It can be searched for events in a specific industry or consumer sector or by region. Another way is to check with your local visitors and convention bureau about conferences booked months ahead. Oftentimes, the meeting planner would like to have someone local rather than pay travel expenses.

• Fixed Local venues also might offer opportunities…organizations that offer job training skills, hospitals and holistic healthcare centers, bookstores, governmental bodies, municipal cultural centers, senior centers, youth centers and more. Google is your friend here, too!

Now, of course, you can do ALLLLLL of this yourself. Why bother?

What Are The TOP NINE ways to Get Booked for Speaking Opportunities in 2020?

Whether you are an accomplished professional who uses speaking to growth your business, or an early stage speaker, the question always is how do I get booked—or get MORE bookings.

I’m Jackie Lapin and I’m an expert on helping people get booked! Over the past years, I’ve booked more than 10,000 interviews and speaking engagements.

And I’ve been on many stages myself—just using the tactics I’m going to offer you now.

  • First, develop a signature talk that really speaks to the problem you solve for your target audience. Know who you serve and how you can alleviate their pain.

  • This addresses two issues—it will tell the booker exactly what you are offering that will improve the lives of his or her audience—the single most important criteria for booking you. And it will help you narrow down what speaking gigs you will submit yourself for.

  • Next, make sure that you commit at least 3 hours per week to pursuing your speaking gigs. Make an appointment with yourself on your calendar, just as you would with a client or prospect. That way the week won’t slip by without you making contact with bookers. As I always say, if you can do the time, you can’t earn the dime!  

  • Next, you’ll need a few useful resources. The first is a powerful speaker one-sheet that addresses why you will be perfect for this audience and presents you as the professional you are! This should be well designed and speak to the problem you solve.

  • You’ll also want to have a video of you presenting…Not something taken from your cell phone with bad lighting and sound! It should be professional quality. You will need 3 to 5 minutes that really shows the booker how impactful you are on stage and how you engage with the audience. You don’t want to use a glitzy speaker reel here, with lots of quick cuts. He or she wants to see the real you in action.
  • Next, you will construct an emailed proposal letter. This should speak to why you –and your content–would be an ideal match for this audience. It should be no longer than about 5 paragraphs, and should draw attention to the attached speaker one-sheet, and feature the video link.

  • Select the opportunities where you wish to speak, and research the speaker coordinator either online or by phone. A good idea is to start with local meetings, venues and associations, where you can get booked more easily and if you have an offer that resonates with the audience, attract clients and make a lot of money!   • Now once you send the proposal letter, you should follow up by phone. I always recommend the rule of 3…one email and two phone calls or two emails and one phone call. If you don’t receive a response try to reach the person on LinkedIn. If there is no response to that last attempt, just let it go on and move to pursue the next opportunity.

  • Always be pleasant, even if you are being declined or the speaker booker isn’t returning your calls. Leave the way open for future conversations, rather than burning your bridges.

7 Ways to Make Your Message Matter to a Speaker Booker

I want to give you some insight, a little leg up over those people competing for these valuable opportunities. Let me share with you the 7 criteria that will sway a gatekeeper to feel that your message is important for his/her audience to hear. Emphasizing any of these will get the booker’s attention. Hit all 7 and you’ve got a home run!

Here’s what will MAKE YOUR MESSAGE MATTER to a booker:

  • First, your content directly addresses an issue, a challenge or a problem faced by that audience and provides a pathway to a solution. They need to know that this topic fulfills some need this audience has. That you offer a faster, better, more effective means to resolve some pain, suffering or disadvantage that the majority of this community can identify with.
  • Secondly, that your topic is timely. Perhaps there is an event, a cultural shift, an industry revolution, a tragedy, an economic trend, a change or a news development that impacts this audience– one which makes your topic particularly relevant. Maybe it is simply seasonal or holiday related—for example: a way to alleviate depression at Christmas. Timing, as they say, is everything. And it can work to your advantage with speaking, radio and summits.
  • Third, your subject matter fits the selected theme chosen for this upcoming event. Oftentimes national conferences, quarterly meetings or festivals are planned with a specific theme in mind. See where you already fit, tailor something you already have, or create a new presentation that meshes with the theme of the event or program on which you wish to get booked. The booker will think you are tailor-made for his or her agenda.
  • Fourth, your message is a match for the specific demographic. No point in talking about aging strategies for a millennial crowd, having a business sales system for a solely spiritual audience, or promoting an anti-gun message for a conservative men’s group. These are extremes of course, but you get the picture…your subject matter must be a fit…it must recognize the unique values and needs of the specific market you wish to reach. If your message IS a match for the psychographic, age, gender, mindset, professional status/skill set, health condition or other key factors for this audience, that will influence the booker’s decision.
  • Fifth, your message provides hope, inspiration or motivation that uplifts participants or provides the impetus for action. Whether it’s a sales system that will help the audience breakthrough their current barriers or a truly motivational and inspirational message, you must provide the audience hope! Hope that they can get out of the box they are in. You provide the light at the end of the tunnel, holding your outstretched hand. You show what is possible. This can provide a real impetus to put you at the top of the booker’s list.
  • Sixth, your information increases the knowledge and skill set of the audience attendees and helps create upward mobility in their lives and careers. What real value are you offering? The booker needs to know that you are willing to give the attendees really valuable content—whether it’s during a paid engagement, a speak-to-enroll situation, an opportunity where you offer something free that people can’t resist, or any other platform. You must offer great content before you can ask for anything more. And you will need to show how the attendees will be able to implement the information you provide. The booker will weigh this heavily.
  • Lastly, the seventh criteria. Your message includes an offer that is within the affordability range for this crowd. If you offer a high-priced program for people who have just come out of the foster care system or are struggling single moms, the booker will feel you are offering people something that is not within the realm of their possibility. If your price point is a reasonable match for the audience, then your message is an asset and not a liability, otherwise, it will be perceived as offering false hope. The product you promote at the engagement must have a price point that is a match for this audience’s economic status and previous track record.
